GIFT : A Brown Envelope, Secret Santa for Kyoy!

Here is a fanfiction for Kyoy. I chose number three, which was; "Jet/Virginia or both of them with Clive and Gallows and maybe even Maya in a light genfic."

I am sorry it's so short, and I kind of feel like I didn't cover the request properly, but...  :(
I hope you like anyway.

A Brown Envelope
A Wild Arms III Story

By Black Waltz 0

A brown envelope, crinkled from time spent in the saddlebag. Small, thin and licked shut. Virginia pushed it into Jet’s hands across from the campfire.

Jet looked down at it with a slightly raised eyebrow. “What’s this?”

Virginia smiled encouragingly. “It’s a present, Jet. Haven’t you ever received one before?” She asked.

The young drifter frowned at her from beneath his scarf. “Uh- of course I have. Don’t be stupid. I’m just asking why. Why’re you givin’ this to me?”

It was a slight white lie; he couldn’t really recall a time when anyone had personally given him something for nothing. What was the protocol for that? Was he supposed to give her something in return? Jet ran a gloved finger down the v-shaped fold of the envelope slowly.

Leaning back, Virginia looked up at the murky sky above them, framed by the ridges of the cliffs. The highlands held many different places for them to hide from bounty hunters, and gradually it was beginning to feel a little bit like home.

That thought both comforted and saddened her. It was the end of the year and they all had places, real homes to return to, but as long as they each had a bounty on their heads…

Contact with their families would place them all into the line of fire. Nobody wanted that. Not even Clive, who was practically a stone’s throw away from his wife and child and who burned to see them again.

A cold wind blew through the campsite, funnelled by the canyon. Gallows shivered and wrapped his blanket up more tightly around his shoulders. Winters on Filgaia were mild during the daytime, but they bit back with a violent tenacity once the sun went down. On some nights, with an open sky, the cold of the desert was nearly unbearable.

Virginia thought back to Jet’s question before her mind could wander too far over past events and warmed her hands over the fire. They tingled pleasantly as warmth returned to them. “Well, it’s supposed to be the Winter Solstice tonight. Do you know what that is?”

Jet nodded slightly. “Yeah. It’s supposed to be the time when the day is shortest and the night is longest.” Pausing for a moment to think; his frown intensified. “So what, you giving me a farewell gift for when I freeze to death tonight?”

The young girl giggled a bit and shook her head. “Of course not, Jet! I wouldn’t do something like that to you! Where I come from on Filgaia its customary to give gifts to close friends on the night of the Winter Solstice. It’s so we can celebrate the ending of the year and the arrival of the new year; starting afresh once again.”

Unexpectedly, Clive spoke from his side of the campfire. He seemed wistful. “Ah, Yuletide. I had almost forgotten…” He had a novel for his daughter and a bracelet for his wife somewhere in his own horse’s saddlebag. It didn’t seem like they were going to be delivered this year, and that thought filled him with regret.

This was a custom that Jet had never really heard of, mostly because he had never had a family to share it with. He hooked one finger under the fold of the envelope and pulled, ripping it open a portion. “What is it?” He inquired gruffly.

“Open it and see.” Virginia urged, and then as Jet began to progressively tear the envelope open she began to babble and explain her gift before he could even look at it.

“It’s actually a present from all of us, because we all guessed that you’ve never had a real Solstice before and it would’ve been a nice surprise. It’s not much, but…”

Jet pulled the single slip of paper out of the envelope. She was right, it wasn’t much, at least not monetarily, but he held it there, frozen, just staring at it silently.

It was a photograph, much like the one Virginia kept of her father, folded up and hidden away for fear of losing it. That was all it was. A single photograph.

It was Virginia, standing in front of a photographer’s back screen; smiling in a tone of sepia. On either side of her were Clive and Gallows, also captured by the flash of a camera. They weren't in their best Sunday clothes for the shot, which probably would have irritated the photographer, but in their normal drifter clothes; dusty and beaten and faded by the sun. Just as Jet could remember them.

Jet checked the back of the photograph, perhaps to find a date so he could figure out how long ago it had been since his team had snuck away from him for a photo op, but no date was there. Scribbled on the back were only two words;

A memory.

He had no idea of what to say.

“This is…” He began, then trailed off.

She couldn’t help it; Virginia blushes slightly in embarrassment when he looked up at her. “I know it’s kind of stupid, but we all felt you might like it if you could have a physical memory to keep with you always, so you’ll know that you’ll always have one memory that’ll last forever – us.”

“That is just too sappy.” Gallows commented, but he seemed pleased as well.

“There will indeed come a time when the four of us will no longer be able to travel together, but the memories will endure.” Clive added, playing a little on Jet’s last name.

Jet Enduro cracked a slight smile, then folded the photograph carefully and stored it safely in the pocket of his vest, close to his heart. They made a good point, and as long as none of them knew about the sudden tightness in his chest and throat he’d be fine.

“Thanks.” He said, and meant it.

Tell me what you think. Do you like it? Is it good?
